Although primarily remembered for his steadfast commitments
to preserving the Union and abolishing slavery, Abraham Lincoln’s
presidency also greatly expanded the power of the executive,
particularly in the role of Commander in Chief. His successful
management of the greatest crisis in American history and his tragically
premature death earned Lincoln the distinction of being considered one
of U.S. history’s greatest Presidents.
